Kentucky
Sharon P. Clark was appointed as Kentucky’s Insurance Commissioner by Gov. Andy Beshear on Jan. 6, 2020, after previously serving in the role from 2008 to 2016. Her combined tenure has made her the longest-serving Commissioner since the Department of Insurance (DOI) was established in 1870.
As the first director of the DOI’s Consumer Protection and Education Division, she led initiatives to hire its first ombudsman, add consumer education and outreach functions, and strengthen enforcement efforts by expanding the number of consumer complaint investigators.
Commissioner Clark is an active member of the º£½ÇÂÛ̳, serving on the Executive (EX) Committee, the Market Regulation and Consumer Affairs (D) Committee, and various other task force groups. She is also vice chair of the Financial Regulation Standards and Accreditation (F) Committee, vice chair of the Producer Licensing (D) Task Force, and a member of the of the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) Board of Directors.
Additionally, Commissioner Clark served as the chair of the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange Advisory Board during its inaugural year and continues as a Board member. She is a member of the Kentucky Group Health Insurance Board, and during her first tenure as Commissioner, she served as an officer of the º£½ÇÂÛ̳ and chair of the Market Regulation and Consumer Affairs (D) Committee. Commissioner Clark was also an officer for the º£½ÇÂÛ̳’s Southeast Zone and a past secretary-treasurer for the NIPR Board.
Prior to being appointed Insurance Commissioner, she worked for the Finance and Administration Cabinet and held positions with the Kentucky House of Representatives, the Public Service Commission, and the former Workforce Development Cabinet.
Commissioner Clark earned both a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky.
